Blogging: Build It And They May Come

I’m often asked for tips and tricks from budding bloggers and one of the most important ones I suggest is to regularly share blog posts once they’re published. Yes, you can write and publish multiple times a week, but if you don’t share them out, very few people are going to know about them ...

Ah, but Google!” I hear you proclaim. Well, yes, Google is great for traffic, but unless you have perfect SEO, a perfect key phrase, and are blogging about a subject a million other people aren’t, then you’re not going to get a lot of visitors.

"So sharing your newly published blog posts to social media is a must!"

There are three major platforms in use and these are Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. I prefer Facebook personally, though others like the randomness of Twitter and the more sedate pace of LinkedIn. When we’re sharing for our clients, we share to all three, but the one you prefer is down to you.

Sharing on social media:

- When sharing to your Facebook timeline, once you’ve made the original share, give yourself 48-hours before sharing a blog post again and try to ask a question when you share it, and a different question on subsequent shares. Don’t make your blog posts sales pitches either or people will see right through it and not bother clicking.

- On Twitter, you can share over and over although sharing a blog post more than twice a day - once in the morning and once in the evening - can be a bit over the top. Twitter doesn’t really care, but you don’t want to be thought of as a spammer and lose followers.

- LinkedIn is a bit more serious so you should follow the Facebook rule and once you’ve shared it there, only share it again a few days later. Business users are a little different to the personal users on Facebook (though they are the same people mostly) so ask your question when you share, but you can make it a little more sales.

Other social media platforms are available, but these are the big three!

And don’t forget groups on Facebook and LinkedIn too, but remember, only share into those groups once. With a group, you’re looking to start a conversation so spamming the group over and over will get you booted out.

"Remember to look for people asking for help in groups!"

If you have a blog post that can answer their question, share the URL in a comment as I mentioned in last week’s blog post on our blog search tool. That way, they’re reading your blog post, looking at your branding, and learning about how good you really are at what you do.

One of my clients uses this simple strategy and gets a lot of business from it.
